Watanuki is Yūko's assistant. He comes to her shop every day after school to help out, though it means that he usually gets caught up in escapades of a supernatural or magical nature.

Watanuki is typical Japanese teenager but for one fact – he can see spirits. Haunted by this fact, he ended up at Yūko's shop one day, and in exchange for not having to see these spirits anymore, started working for her. He cooks for Yūko, occasionally cleans, and often ends up on strange adventures involving otherworldly spirits. Watanuki is the main protagonist of ×××HOLiC, and his journeys are portrayed in that program.
Watanuki was first seen in The Inevitable Encounter standing outside Yūko's house when Syaoran, Sakura, Fai, and Kurogane arrived. He brought both of the Mokonas out, and the white one hopped over and joined the group.
Watanuki made the fondant au chocolat that the group eats in The Café in Sakura Country.
