Plot Overview

Fai has a dream where he is being chased by Ashura. When he wakes, everyone else is asleep save Kurogane. When the group wakes, they leave the cave where they were staying and walk to a walled city. Though it is morning, the sky is still dark. At the city, Kurogane bangs on the door until it is opened by Touya and Yukito.

Yukito treats them to a huge feast — created by magic. It turns out that everyone in the land has a bit of magical power. They further explain that the ruler of the land is determined by dreams, as whomever appears in a common dream shared by all the citizenry becomes ruler. However, the last monarch refused to take the throne, and now the kingdom is in decline, which induces the constant night.

The group are invited to the palace by Kotoko and Sumomo, who request that Fai use his magical powers to find a new king. He refuses to use his magic, and so the group is escorted to the "special guests" room — the jail. Kurogane breaks them out, and him and Syaoran fight while Sakura, Mokona, and Fai go on ahead.

Fai and Sakura make their way to an upper room, where they run into Chi, the new ruler. Kotoko and Sumomo explain that the new king always has their memory erased so their heart will be pure, but Mokona can sense that she is lonely regardless. Fai offers to be friends, and Chi reaches out a hand to him. When they touch, the pair disappears.

They reappear at Touya's restaurant, and Fai takes Chi out to a café. He teaches her some words, and they attend a parade together. She tells him that she wants to be with him forever.

Back at the restaurant, Syaoran and Kurogane talk to Yukito and Touya, and discover that Chi was created by magic. Should she leave the city, she will disappear. Fai knows this, but that doesn't stop them from fleeing from the palace guards now in pursuit. Kurogane runs outside and fights off the guards, while Chi uses her magic to make her and Fai disappear again. They reappear just before the gate, and Chi begs Fai to run away with her. He explains to her that he can't.

The sun finally comes up, as Chi accepts her responsibility as ruler. Fai and the others bid farewell, with Chi learning one final word: "Goodbye."

Allusions and References

CLAMP References

  • Chobits: Chi, Kotoko, and Sumomo are all characters from this series. Chi is the main character, a "persocom" (personal computer) in the shape of a human who is found by a college student. When he boots her up, she has no memory and must be taught almost everything. Kotoko and Sumomo are laptop persocoms. The cafe that Fai takes Chi to, Tirol, is the name of the bakery in Chobits where Chi finds part-time employment. The "greatest magician" that Yukito describes is actually Chitose, whose counterpart Chitose Hibiya created Chi.
  • Cardcaptor Sakura: Touya and Yukito once more reappear in random jobs, and true to form, Touya is once more in the restaurant industry like his counterpart Touya Kinomoto.
