Plot Overview

Micheal has had the office prepare for a surprise excursion by bringing swimsuit, a toothbrush, rubber soled shoes, and a ski mask. It is revealed that he's arranged for them to go on a 'booze cruise' on Lake Wallempaupack, in January, for a motivational presentation. Immediately, Michael begins the motivational speaking analogies by proclaiming himself Captain while he is observed by visiting Dunder-Mifflin employee Brenda. On arrival at the boat, he butts heads with the captain of the ship. Captain Jack derails most of Michaels attempts by virtue of being more charismatic, fun, and motivating with his experiences as a Desert Storm veteran.

Jim brings Katy as his guest and she spends much of the time with Pam and Roy. Katy, as a former high school cheerleader, clearly connects far more easily with Roy than Jim, so Jim and Pam go out for fresh air. After proclaiming 'Sometimes I just don't get Roy', Jim and Pam share an extended and uncomfortable silence where Jim is unable to tell Pam what he feels. Pam, uncomfortable, leaves to go back in. Definitely drunk, Roy listens to an annecdote from Captain Jack about returning from Desert Storm and marrying his first wife and impulsively announces a wedding date of June 10th. Jim, just having built up courage to talk openly with Pam, is crushed. Stunned and heartbroken, he matter of factly breaks up with Katy.

Michael, nauseous and drunk, breaks in for a last ditch motivational analogy and announces that 'the ship is sinking'. Focusing on the announcement rather than on the analogy to office business, the non-Dunder Mifflin cruise-goers take this as a real event and one jumps ship. Captain Jack puts Michael in the brig, zip-tying his hands and making him wait on the deck. Jim goes out to talk and tells Michael that he used to have a thing for Pam. Michael has been clearly oblivious about Jim and Pam's relationship and, surprisingly, motivates Jim to never give up.

• After some motivational words from Captain Jack, Roy drunkenly announces his desire to finally set a date to wed Pam. Jim, crushed, breaks up with Katy shortly after while still on the boat. Michael becomes the first person in the office to whom Jim confesses his crush on Pam.

• Jim and Pam find themselves alone on the ship. Jim, in a lovestruck state not diminished from the sealed confession hinted at in the "Christmas Party" episode, is speechless and lost in Pam's eyes until she becomes uncomfortable and leaves.

Captain Jack: Women and children.

Michael: No! No, salesmen and profit centers.

Captain Jack: That's a stupid analogy.

• Dwight: Seasick? Captain Jack says you should look at the moon.

Michael: (on the verge of throwing up) Cap'n-Jack's-a-fartface (throws up and then notices Brenda's concern) I'm on medication.

Michael: Vomicillin.

Jim: She's engaged...

Michael: BFD, engaged ain't married.

Jim: (contemplative) Huh.
