- Her father, Edward was an electrical engineer who immigrated from County Donegal, Ireland as a child
- Her mother, Roseann (who was Irish-American) was a homemaker; she died of breast cancer in 1973 before Rosie's 11th birthday
- Has an older brother, Daniel, who is a member of the New York State Assembly
- Graduated from Commack High School in 1980
- Briefly attended Dickinson College and later transferred to Boston University before dropping out of school entirely
