From The TV IV

Season One of Red Dwarf premiered on February 15, 1988.

Season one starts with the inital background story of Red Dwarf, a Jupiter Mining Corporation mining ship. The series introduces the anti-hero Dave Lister, who is as close to a professional slob as you can get, and his bunkmate Arnold J. Rimmer who has several pyschological and social issues. Rimmer's actions result in Red Dwarf being flooded with a lethal dose of Cadmium-2 radiation killing every crew member on board. Lister inadvertently escapes death, when he is sentenced to stasis for the remainder of the trip for smuggling a Cat aboard.

Holly keeps Lister in stasis until the radioactivity dies down, after 3 million years he's finally released. Lister discovers that a race of creatures has evolved from Frankenstein (Lister's cat) when he finds The Cat roaming the ship. Holly also brings back Lister's bunkmate Rimmer as a hologram to keep Lister company.
