Plot Overview

Lister prepares to go back into stasis for the return voyage to Earth, which will take 3 millions years. He has invited the Cat to go into stasis with him. The Cat is told to bring just a few essentials, but the cat's notion of essentials is 10 wardrobe racks of clothing.

Meanwhile as Holly is accellerating toward light speed (an hours-long process), Rimmer asks that Holly change him into a clean uniform -- Rimmer is, after all, a hologram, and needs the computer (Holly) to change his appearance. Holly complies.

Rimmer then pompously demands that Holly give him a haircut: a nice short haircut, a manly haircut. Holly tries to tell Rimmer that he is extremely busy with the lightspeed preparations, but Rimmer insults him and angrily insists on the haircut anyway. So Holly obliges ... with a full-bodied woman's haircut!

As Red Dwarf comes even closer to light speed, time dilates, and the crew begin to experience visions from their own futures. Sadly for Lister his future appears to include being reduced to his component atoms by a rather large explosion.

At the very end of the episode we see that Lister has somehow gotten two babies of his own. Quite a feat considering that there are only males aboard.

Quotes

  • Lister: But Rimmer, death isn't the handicap it used to be in the olden days. It doesn't screw your career up like it used to.
Rimmer: That's what they say Lister, but if you had two people come in for a job, and one of them was dead. Which one would you pick?
