Plot Overview

While examining evidence found at a really gruesome crime scene, Abby smells the distinctive almond-like spell of cyanide gas. McGee manages to drag her to safety after she falls over trying to escape her lab, but if they had been in the lab for just three more minutes they both would have been killed. It looks as if someone was trying to poison Abby, especially after Tony reports that "Our mistress of the dark is keeping secrets from us."

Abby has taken out a restraining order against an ex-boyfriend named Mikel Mawher, and his stalker-like behavior towards Abby makes him a prime suspect as Abby's would-be assassin. But Mikel — whose job it is to clean up murder scenes — has an airtight alibi, as he spent the past couple of days surrounded by detectives. Even so, he steps up his creepy behavior a notch by finding Abby at McGee's apartment. He tells Abby during a phone call "Let's just say that you're not as safe as you think you are."

When Mikel is eventually caught, he protests his innocence even though in his room there are pictures of Abby in the street doing her own thing, unaware of Mikel taking pictures of her. During an interview with Gibbs, Mikel tells Gibbs "You guys have it all wrong. I'm not trying to hurt Abby." he says, "But I know who is."
