Plot Overview

The first game of the World Series is today and Ron Updyke, the sports reporter, has gotten Kolchak a ticket as repayment for saving his skin, during a disagreement with a hefty sportswoman whom he called "elephantine".

Kolchak goes to investigate the loss of two zoo animals: a panther and a cheetah. Both lost in the past two days. On his way he hears about a shootout at the Raydyne Industries warehouse. Once there Kolchak pushes his way up close. Something invisible breaks through the wall from inside, throwing policemen everywhere. As Kolchak and dozens of police look on, two tons of lead ingots simply vanish before their eyes.

At the zoo, a worker cleans out a cage. The bars have been bent outward. Later, Kolchak discovers that all the animals had their bone marrow extracted, probably eaten ... by something. Elsewhere small appliances are being stolen and gutted for their electronic parts.

Down at the morgue, Kolchak talks with "Gordy the Ghoul". He tells Kolchak that people are dying; having their bone marrow extracted.

At a police press conference, Kolchak notices that all 17 wristwatches worn by those present at the Raydyne warehouse incident have stopped, including his own.

Kolchak's boss, Tony, has been pressured by the government to keep this story quiet because defense contractor Raydyne Industries is involved. But he accidentally lets it slip that it's a UFO incident. The leads Kolchak to a UFO enthusiasts/encounter group, where he starts asking questions.

This leads him to one of their members who is doing field work. Kolchak arrives to find that the man has been killed. He then follows his compass to a planetarium, where something unseen is manipulating the controls, using the equipment to examine star charts.

It takes notice of Kolchak, and comes at him. He takes pictures, and for some reason, the creature is kept at bay, becuase of the charger for the flash.

Kolchak gets in his car and finds the creature's ship in the woods. He even tries to go inside, but the creature returns and chases him. Kolchak is able to use his camera's flash to protect himself yet again. The creature boards the ship and leaves.
