Plot Overview

Kolchak's boss, Tony, forces him to mentor an inexperienced reporter, Monique. She has an uncle in New York who just happens to be Tony's boss.

Kolchak drives into a shootout between police and the syndicate. Monique blithely walks into the middle of the shootout with no cover at all, in order to take pictures. Frantically, Kolchak grabs her, pulling her to relative safety. He convinces her that she will get better pictures if she hides in the trunk of his car. The bad guys are bound to come running past. Of course he just locks her in the trunk and practically forgets about her.

An employee of the morgue, Gordy the "Ghoul" runs a numbers game based on vital statistics of the bodies that come in. To get information Kolchak is forced to buy in. The morgue has bodies coming in with chicken blood in their ears. And they have gotten the same body twice: Francois Edmonds.

Mr. Edmonds was killed by the syndicate, so Kolchak eavesdrops on a syndicate meeting. When the meeting is over, he presses the wrong button and his tape recorder begins playing back at high speed, and he is caught. They recognize him. He crashed the boss's daughter's wedding to get pictures. Things look really bad for Kolchak.

He delays being killed by telling them he knows who is behind the recent spate of bizarre killings of syndicate members. He thinks it's Francois Edmonds come back as a zombie. Be it because they are superstitious people or whatever, but they let him live so they can force him to dig up Francois Edmonds' grave. When he gets to the casket, it's empty.

The syndicate people are standing around the open grave that Kolchak and the grounds keeper have just dug -- the grounds keeper happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kolchak and the grounds keeper are standing in the grave, and have just overheard the synidcate boss and his lackey admitting involvement in a killing. Lucky for them that about that time, the killer zombie returns looking for revenge. It wreaks havoc, killing the syndicate people and running away. The police arrive just in time to arrest Kolchak for grave desecration.

After Tony bails him out, he visits Edmonds' mother, where he apparently gets too close to the truth. Because later when he spys on her conducting a Voodoo ritual, he discovers that his name is written in blood along side the other victims of the zombie. She has marked him for death!

Kolchak gets supplies that he needs to kill a zombie: salt, candles, and needle & thread. He tracks the zombie to an automobile salvage yard, and finds the zombie lying in the back of a hearse. Trembling, he fills the zombie's mouth with salt. Then he readies the needle and thread. Just as he is about to start sewing the mouth shut, the zombie stirs, opening its eyes.

It chases Kolchak through the junkyard. Kolchak is able to hook the zombie to a cable, suspended well above the ground. Kolchak lights candles beneath the zombie -- the final step in killing the zombie. It dies once and for all this time.

Kolchak puts Monique in a cab and sends her to New York. Later Tony listens in disbelief as her uncle tells him that he is actually glad that she was sent back. He never wanted her to go to Chicago in the first place.
