The Night Stalker was the pilot of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and is about a Las Vegas reporter who investigates a series of strange killings of young women between sunset and dawn. The killer turns out to be a vampire. It aired as part of the ABC Movie of the Week and became one of the highest-rated TV movies of all time. Its success spawned an ABC Movie of the Week sequel, The Night Strangler, which was reset in Seattle, and finally the series, again relocated to Chicago.
