It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005—) is one of the several series FX produced in late 2005 on a limited season schedule. The series, along with Starved, features a darker sort of comedy that matches FX's other edgy shows like The Shield and Rescue Me.
The series revolves around four friends in Philadelphia, and, as it is in most sitcoms, wackiness ensues. However, the wackiness that occurs in this series involves a scheme to operate a place where underage kids can buy watered-down beer and going to abortion rallies to meet women. The friends are connected by their joint ownership of an Irish pub in Philadelphia, as well as their precarious judgment calls.
The series finished its first season on September 13, 2005 and was met with positive reviews and a reasonable following. It was picked up for a second season on October 6, 2005; the first time in FX's history that an original comedy series was given a second season. After a well received second season featuring the addition of Danny DeVito to the cast, the series was brought back a third time with an increased episode order. A fourth season was ordered shortly after the third season aired and in July 2008 FX announced that they had ordered 39 more episodes in addition to the 13 already produced for season 4.
