Grey's Anatomy is a medical drama about several first-year surgical interns (later residents) at a Seattle hospital that began airing on ABC on March 27, 2005. It debuted in the slot following Desperate Housewives, but in fall 2006 ABC moved the show to Thursdays at 9 pm, where it currently competes successfully against CSI. According to Nielson ratings, season two averaged 19.9 million viewers per episode, making it the fifth most watched TV show in America for the 2005–06 television season.

What happens when seven surgical interns fresh from med school try to have normal lives while doing a job that leaves no time at all for a life? Grey's Anatomy is a medical drama that explores what happens when high-powered jobs and high drama mix in close quarters. Meredith Grey, the title character, is better known to her fellow interns and to the doctors at the hospital as the daughter of the groundbreaking surgeon Ellis Grey. Meredith must not only establish herself as a surgeon in her own right, but must also hide her mother's secret debilitating illness from everyone in the medical community. While there are theoretically many other doctors participating in the internship, the show focuses almost exclusively on Meredith, who narrates the opening and end of each episode, and her four closest friends.

George O'Malley is the cute but very awkward "boy next door" doomed to friend status despite his raging crush on Meredith. Cristina Yang, a cool, brilliant surgeon concerned only with advancing her own career, rubs everyone the wrong way yet eventually becomes Meredith's confidant and best friend. Like Cristina, Alex Karev insults and steps on everyone around him on his quest to become a plastic surgeon, but sometimes displays an inner decent nature completely at odds with his affected personality. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens is a beautiful, kind girl who worked her way out of a white-trash, trailer park childhood all the way to an MD, and is the only debt-free intern (having paid for med school by modeling). Izzie suffers occasionally from a lack of confidence, but in the hospital she connects with patients and cares for them very deeply.

When the new doctors first step into Seattle Grace Hospital, to their horror they are assigned to Dr. Miranda Bailey, nicknamed "The Nazi" for her treatment of interns. They have seven years of specialty surgical training ahead of them, during which time they will devote almost 24 hours a day to their demanding but ultimately rewarding job at the hospital. Aside from Dr. Bailey, the interns often interact with cool and collected heart surgeon Dr. Preston Burke, hotshot neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd, and chief of surgery Dr. Richard Webber. While each episode features interesting and unusual medical cases at the hospital, the show mainly focuses on the relationships—friendly and romantic—that connect and divide these characters as they try to balance their lives and their crazy jobs as surgeons.
