Ellis Grey was Meredith's mother. Married for only a few years to her father Thatcher, this brilliant but highly driven surgeon tired of him quickly, leading to her having an affair with her then fellow resident, Richard Webber. Divorcing soon after, she made it difficult for Thatcher to have any contact with his daughter, which ultimately led to the father and daughter sadly being estranged from each other for many years.
