Fred and Barney Meet The Thing (1979) is an animated comedy / superhero action program. It was a package show which featured new and rerun episodes from two unrelated shows, The New Fred and Barney Show and The Thing. Although the name would imply that the characters from the different shows interacted with another, this only happened in the intro and bumpers, and not in the episodes themselves. After running only 11 weeks, it was expanded to 90 minutes and became Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo.
The Thing segment involved the orange rock-skinned superhero from the Fantastic Four but his other self is completely unrelated. This Ben Grimm is a teenager who, when he joins the two halves of his ring together and chants "Thing Ring, do your thing!", becomes the Thing to keep his friends Betty Harkness, her tomboyish younger sister Kelly and Betty's rich and snobbish boyfriend Ronald Radford safe from evildoers, including recurring foes the Yancy Street Gang, a trio of crude and buffoonish bikers. Of the main characters in that segment, only Kelly and her and Betty's father, scientist Dr. Harkness, know of Benjy's secret identity as the Thing.
Fred and Barney Meet The Thing was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, with the Thing segments co-produced by Marvel Comics. While The Walt Disney Company owns the Thing character through Marvel Comics due to its purchase of that company in 2009, the entire series (including the Thing segments) is owned by WarnerMedia, with distribution handled by Warner Bros. Television.
