- His father, Edward was a steel mill worker and a truck driver and his mother, Ruth Ann was a homemaker and a social worker
- Is of Irish descent
- Attended and graduated from Ursuline High School in Youngstown, Ohio
- In 1969, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 as an outside linebacker, but was released from the team before the start of the 1969 regular season
- Attended Ohio University on a football scholarship and transferred to Youngstown State University in his sophomore year
- Was a social studies teacher at Ursuline High School before fully committing to acting
- He was a member of the company at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts
- Was almost cast as Sam Malone on Cheers, but the role ended up going to Ted Danson instead
- Married to actress Catherine Rusoff since 1986; they have two daughters, Claire and Sophia
