The Doctor is the chosen moniker for the Time Lord who is the title character on Doctor Who. His real name is uncomprehensible to humans. When he dies he regenerates into a new body (played by a new actor) and many of his character traits change. This has happened nine times (for a total of ten actors) over the long life of the series.
