The Seventh Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor on Doctor Who, portrayed by Sylvester McCoy.

Basic Information

The Seventh Doctor started out as something of a clown, shown by running around the Tardis as The Rani chased after him, and perhaps most infamously, his love for playing spoons. In his second year a different face of this incarnation of The Doctor started to surface: manipulative, lying, and with a huge love of puzzles. In the final year of this doctor, (as well as the original series of Doctor Who) the clown was gone forever, replaced by the darker manipulative figure.

Character History

Regenerated from the Sixth Doctor had Mel with him for his first season as he encountered such villains as The Rani and the Bannermen. At the end of his first season he met up with Ace who stayed with him until the end of the series (but didn't appear in the TV Movie). His second season he tackled two of the series' more famous villains, first the Daleks and later the Cybermen. In keeping with the script editor Andrew Cartmel's vision of The Doctor, he always tended to win by outsmarting them via manipulation, such as fooling the Daleks into take the Hand of Omega in Remembrance of the Daleks and general mindgames with Ace, as evidenced in episodes like Greatest Show in the Galaxy and The Curse of Fenric.

Quotes

"Dalek, you have been defeated. Surrender. You have failed, your forces are destroyed. Your home planet; a burnt cinder circling a dead sun. Even Davros, your creator, is dead. You have no superiors, no inferiors, no reinforcements, no hope, no rescue. You're trapped a trillion miles and a thousand years from a disintegrated home. I've defeated you, you no longer serve any purpose."

  • The Seventh Doctor thinking aloud in Survival:

"He doesn't have to outrun the lion, only his friend. Then the lion catches up with his friend and eats him. The strong survive, the weak are killed: the law of the jungle! ... Yes, very clever, if you don't mind losing your friend. But what happens when the next lion turns up? I think you'd better get your running shoes on, gentlemen."

  • Final lines of Survival, the final lines of the 'original series' before the hiatus:

"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do."
