Basic Information
The War Doctor is something of an enigma. He had been considered the incarnation of the Doctor the other incarnations never spoke about because of a hidden shame. This shame was never disclosed until the retcon "minisode" The Night of the Doctor. He was implied as being in combat in a second "minisode," The Last Day, then he became the focal point of the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor. As a result, he went unnumbered.
Character History
The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) had been mortally wounded in the Great Time War and brought to the Sisterhood of Karn where he was accused of heinous crimes as well as the extinction of Time Lord society as a whole. In trying to destroy the Daleks who had invaded the city of Arcadia, the Doctor had to destroy his own species. Instead of facing a trial, he chose to return to make right what was wrong. The Sisterhood gives him a potion which allowed him to regenerate into the War Doctor, although in-universe he says because of what he did he lost his right to be called the Doctor. He first appeared at the end of The Name of the Doctor after No. 11 rescues Clara from his time stream and then joins 10 and 11 in The Day of the Doctor to rescue Gallifrey in the Time War. Traveling through time, the three Doctors get the cooperation of the other ten Doctors (including the to-be-forthcoming 12th) in hiding Gallifrey in a space pocket, leaving the other combatants (Daleks, Sontarans, Zygons, etc.) to destroy themselves. With Gallifrey saved, the War Doctor had redeemed himself thus allowing him to regenerate into Doctor no. 9.
