Plot Overview

Imprisoned aboard Galactica, Baltar wrestles with the thoughts of whether he is truly human. Coupled with this is the methods of interrogation he is put through so that Roslin and Adama can know what the Cylons know about the Eye of Jupiter.

Meanwhile, Sam and Dee let their respective partners decide the future of their marriages.

Notes

Music

  • Raya Yarbrough - "Lord Knows I Would"
  • Raya Yarbrough - "All That Remains"

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • "Joe's bar" is built on Galactica by some of the crew.
  • Roslin notes Baltar's mention of the Final Five and ponders a connection.
  • Roslin concludes that Baltar will be given a trial.

Characters

  • Tyrol and Cally have been fighting.
  • Anders tells Kara that if she loves Lee, she needs to go to him. Dee similarly tells Lee that she won't stand in the way if he goes to Kara. They meet and Kara asks if he'll leave Dee if she leaves Anders. Lee is afraid she'll do something like she did the time they confessed their love. Ultimately, Lee returns to Dee, standing by their marriage. He looks across the bar to see Kara with Anders.
  • Baltar is being put through several attempts to get him to confess what he knows. Ultimately, they get nothing from him. Roslin confesses she wanted an admission of guilt.
  • Baltar confesses his desire of being a Cylon, but resigns to being just human.
  • Gaeta goes to see Baltar in the middle of the night. It's revealed that he was wanting to kill him because of some secret Baltar knows about him.

Referbacks

  • Roslin's comment about using the stick instead of the carrot on Baltar is nearly verbatim of Baltar's own comment to Admiral Cain in "Pegasus" regarding the Cylon prisoner Gina.
  • Roslin hands Baltar his glasses, much in the way he did to her when she was in the Cylon prison in "Precipice".

Trivia

The Show

Bonus Scene

  • Roslin talks with Caprica-Six in her cell, hoping to get her to give up information. Roslin promises she won't be executed with Caprica-Six offering information only if Baltar is assured a fair trial, even willing to be a witness.

Behind the Scenes

  • The original idea about what Baltar whispers in Gaeta's ear was part of a subplot for the latter half of the season that was to pay off in the finale, about an incident on New Caprica involving the Saggitarons, in which Baltar threatens to implicate Gaeta. However, Ron Moore decided to abandon this, which caused a shift in the writing for two later episodes in the season. This also allowed room for Baltar's whisper to be changed and still retain continuity onscreen, as it was when it's revealed in "The Face of the Enemy" webisodes.

Allusions and References

  • The episode's title borrows a lyric from the theme song of the sitcom Cheers.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Baltar: She... Caprica-Six... she chose me. Chose me over all men. Chosen to be seduced, taken by the hand, guided between the light and the dark. But is she an angel, or is she a demon? Is she imaginary or is she real? Is she my own voice, or the voice --
  • Baltar: No! Don’t leave me! Don't leave me! I know I’m flawed. I never claimed to be - Yeah, mistakes, mistakes were made, terrible mistakes. Were they mine? Was I solely to blame? I was a player, that’s all. I was a player. I was struggling, struggling to find my place in God’s plan. God’s resolve. I - I never intended for some things to happen. Doesn’t that matter?
  • Adama: What were you looking for, Doctor?
Baltar: Their faces, but they wouldn't show them to me.
Roslin: Their faces? Whose faces?
Baltar: The Five. The Final Five.
Roslin: The Final Five? Cylons?
Baltar: I thought I might be one of them. I told them I wanted to be one of them.
Roslin: A Cylon. Why?
Baltar: All my sins forgiven. A new beginning.
Roslin: Are you a Cylon, Doctor Baltar?
Baltar: No.
  • Baltar: You see, I literally had a gun pointed to my head, but nobody forced you to play both sides. So I'm asking you, Mister Gaeta, who is the real traitor in this room?
  • Roslin: I told him I didn’t take any satisfaction in seeing his pain, but the truth is I was willing to see him endure a great deal of suffering in order to get what I wanted. It wasn’t some intelligence or some truth. I wanted a genuine admission of guilt.
Adama: That’s something that you’re not gonna get from someone like Baltar. He doesn’t see himself that way. It’s not who he is. In his eyes, he’s the victim, not the criminal.
