Basic Information

Dr. Gaius Baltar of Caprica was a genius technologist before the Cylon attack on the Colonies. He had won many awards for his achievements and was well-known to be a close friend of the President, as well as a frequent guest on Colonial chat shows.

Narcissistic and womanizing to the core, Baltar thought that he was using his brilliant "girlfriend", a Cylon agent and one of the sixth model of human-form Cylon, to work on the defense mainframe. In reality, Six was using his code access to plant a virus in Baltar's pet project, the Command Navigation Program. The CNP allowed faster course plotting through intricate system networks, known as "integrated systems". Her changes included a 'back door' allowing the Cylons to simply turn off networked computers, rendering the Colonies defenseless against the Cylon onslaught.

As an example of Baltar's narcissism, upon finding out that his womanizing is liable to lead to the destruction of Caprica and the other colonies, the first thing that Baltar thinks of is calling his lawyer.

Baltar joined the Colonial remnant fleet through the generosity of Colonial Raptor ECO Karl "Helo" Agathon, who gave up his seat on his Raptor to Dr. Baltar.

Upon Baltar's arrival at the Fleet, he was immediately tapped to develop a Cylon detection unit, and completely at random managed to pick a Cylon out of the entire population of the Fleet, a Number Five posing as a public relations specialist named Aaron Doral. Continuing with his work under Six's instruction, Baltar eventually did develop a working Cylon detector, although after considering the consequences of revealing people as Cylons, he rewires the machine to constantly tag every blood sample run through it as being human.

Baltar has constant visions of the Number Six unit that pretended to be his lover on Caprica. The Six claimed that she was the result of some sort of chip implanted in his head, although later revelations included that no detectable chip exists and she may or may not be a hallucination, although she claims that she is an "angel", sent by the Cylon God to protect Baltar until the end of Mankind.

Upon the first free elections after the fall of the Colonies, Dr. Baltar was elected as the Quorum representative for Caprica Colony, then promptly thereafter elected vice president to keep activist Tom Zarek from being elected to the VP position.

Baltar landed, or rather crashed, on Kobol with Chief Tyrol and Raptor ECO Crashdown's mission team, and was eventually forced to shoot Crashdown after the inexperienced Lieutenant threatened to shoot Cally if she didn't run a likely suicide mission to distract a small force of Cylons.

Caprica-Six's Baltar

After her death and subsequent resurrection, "Caprica-Six" (the Six responsible for the destruction of the Colonies through Baltar) began having hallucinations of Baltar. Her Baltar hallucination is an idealized image of Baltar at his peak before the destruction of the Colonies, snappily-dressed and smooth-talking.

Character History

While living on Caprica, Baltar unknowingly gave the Cylons access to the Colonial Mainframe Computer via a clandestine Number Six. This mistake led to to the near total failure of the Colonial Defense Fleet.
