30 Rock is a comedy about Liz Lemon, head writer on a demanding, live TV program in New York City. Lemon is jolted when a brash new network president interferes with her show and bullies her into convincing Tracy Jordan, a wild and unpredictable movie star, to join the cast. Lemon must manage the unmanageable so that the show — and her dream — can go on.
In the original pilot Rachel Dratch was the star of the "show within the show" but on the August 14, 2006 Variety reported[1] that Dratch's role had been modified to that of a utility player instead of the lead of Lemon's series, The Girlie Show. Jane Krakowski was later cast to take over the lead role of The Girlie Show. In the original Variety article Lorne Michaels made it clear this was done due to the fact that the retooled show would focus more on the interplay between Fey's, Baldwin's and Morgan's backstage characters leaving Dratch a reduced role and they felt this approach would better utilize her comedic talents.
