Season Two of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters premiered on April 10, 2001.

This season is based on the second half of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist manga. This is known as the "Battle City arc", and it covers from the beginning of the Battle City tournament to the end of the quarterfinals.

In this season, Seto Kaiba recieves an Egyptian God card known as Obelisk the Tormentor from Ishizu Ishtar, and opens a Battle City tournament to try to find the remaining two god cards, Slifer the Sky Dragon and the Winged Dragon of Ra. Ishizu tells Yugi he must enter the tournament to stop an evil force, Ishizu's brother Marik Ishtar.

Much of the plot of this season differentiates between the original Japanese version and the English dub. In the original version, Marik wanted to kill Yugi for revenge and to free his family from having to serve him, while in the English dub, he merely wants to claim Yugi's Millenium Puzzle for its power, as he claims it was rightfully his.
