Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is an anime fantasy series starring Yugi Mutou, a high school student who was left an Egyptian artifact called the Millennium Puzzle by his grandfather. Upon completion of the puzzle, Yugi is possessed by a 3000-year-old amnesiac pharaoh. The two go out into the world to piece together the secret of the pharaoh's memories through a card battling game.
The series was dubbed into English and broadcast on both The WB and Cartoon Network, where it became something of a phenomenon not entirely unlike Pokémon was several years prior. The series completed its run in Japan on September 29, 2004. Following the finale of the series, a spin-off was created to fill the void called Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX.
It should be noted that this series should not be confused with the first series by Toei Animation, produced in 1998. Although many fans refer to it as "season zero", it is an entirely different program.

DVD Releases
Summary
Yu-Gi-Oh! started out as volume releases for the first two seasons. To continue with the Battle City DVDs, the Virtual Realm arc was skipped in the release. The season 4 DVD release was pulled after the third volume, but the entirety of season 5 was released in three sets. Later, the series started over being released in season sets, with the first three being released as of now. It is unknown if or when seasons 4 or 5 will be released as full sets, or if the rest of season 4 will be released at all.
Three "uncut" volumes of the series were released, featuring the original Japanese track with subtitles and an English dub with a script closer to that of the Japanese version, no paint edits, and the original Japanese background music score, but for reasons unknown, the uncut DVDs will not continue.
