WSPA is the CBS affiliate for the Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C./Asheville, N.C. market, licensed to Spartanburg and broadcasting on digital channel 7. Its subcarrier broadcasts the television service Ion (7.3). It is owned by Nexstar Media Group.

WSPA opened in 1956 as a CBS affiliate and has remained as such since. They were owned by Spartan Broadcasting up to 2000, when Media General bought them out. In 1995, WSPA was co-owned with WNEG/channel 32 in Toccoa, which at that point became a CBS affiliate to accomodate North Georgia viewers who could not adequately get WSPA or Atlanta's CBS affiliate, WGNX/channel 46 (now WGCL). In 2008, WNEG reverted to independent status after being bought by the University of Georgia Center for Media Research (it switched to PBS affiliation and changed calls to WUGA in May 2011. Today it is independent WGTA).

In 2015, Media General announced it was acquiring Meredith stations and merge under the new name Meredith Media General. This has been scuttled as Nexstar is acquiring Media General for $4.6 billion. In 2017, WSPA sold its digital 7 spectrum transmission in the incentive auction and will relocate it to 11 in the near future, retaining 7 as its virtual channel. Sister station WYCW has sold its digital channel 45 spectrum and will go into a channel sharing arrangement with WSPA. WYCW will transmit from a subchannel of WSPA's digital 11 while retaining 62 as its virtual channel.

Me-TV, which has been on WSPA's DT2 subchannel, is now on the subchannel of NBC affiliate WYFF/channel 4.
