The TV IV:Proposals/Season Pages

From The TV IV

We're thinking of changing the way the Season Template handles links so that it automatically creates the Previous/Next season links for you instead of you having to do it yourself. Another way of further streamlining and making the site much more user-friendly.

  1. I'm putting this here for completeness's sake. Season pages are few and far between on the site for now, and it is a very viable option that won't suck up too much time. Ensures that the Season Template won't be as roundabout to use as it is right now. --Wizardryo 14:42, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  2. One suggestion I'd like to make ist to rename to season pages to use numbers ("Season 1", "Season 2", etc.) instead of words ("Season One", "Season Two") for several reasons: It looks better, it's more readable, it's easier to edit, and probably (I don't know MediaWiki very well) makes automaticly creating the next/previous links easier. (All IMHO of course) -- RoToRa 23:53, 5 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  3. Something from the Help Contents page: Help talk:Contents basically talking about adding links to the relevant DVD releases on Season pages. Which I feel is worth discussing. Your thoughts? --Fezz(Ryvius) 22:40, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  4. I wrote some C++ code that (once compiled) can be used to convert season content from epguides.com and output it to a file that can be uploaded as a season page, complete with proper formatting. check it out on my page. --Randall 09:09, 23 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  5. I agree with comment #2; numerals look more professional than spelled-out words. --CrazyLegs1205 23:39, 29 June 2006 (EDT)

I've created a few macros to make the Episode Lists on the Season Pages easier to create and maintain.

Have a look at The Closer/Season One for an example. I've used positional expansion for now as it makes the page easier to edit, but we have better flexibility longer-term with named parameters. Thoughts? --Salvadors 07:23, 18 Sep 2005 (EDT)

If this site is to compete with tv.com, we need some kind of way to indicate what an episode is about without having to click on every single one. The plot overviews for most episodes are full plot explanations, which if you're scanning for something won't really help. Whether it's for a full episode listing outside of a season page or just for the season pages which we already have, I was thinking that a great little function would be a pop-up bit of text for when you pass your mouse over the link for that episode. You know? Is this possible? --aenematron 16:20, 24 Dec 2005 (EST)

We've been working on it for the past month or so. I asked error if he could create another variable so that the "pop-up" table and font would be smaller, but I assume he's busy with other things. Is this similar to what you're talking about? I agree that we need to have the feature, but it's been on the backburner for so long, it seems. I think the pop-up text you're talking about was one of the first things ever attempted on this site. Links would pop up in green or some other color when there was optional mouseover text to be read. I remember it not working out too well, I think because of the variable involved and it not functioning properly. --Wizardryo | 18:56, 24 Dec 2005 (EST)

Don't mean to pull up an old thread, but I figured it'd be better to put it here than put it in it's own proposal. Anyway, in case you didn't know, the {{Season}} template now has it so that if previousseason or nextseason aren't given, N/A will appear appropriately. My question is, for shows that only have one season, should they show N/A under next and previous or should they just not show the next and previous? To show you what I mean, on the right are the two ideas. The one on the left is how it's handled now and the one on the right is how I'm asking. So which do you think a one season show should do? -Joltman 08:38, 31 January 2007 (EST)

For one season shows, I prefer not to have next or previous seasons at all. DCEdwards1966 | Talk 02:19, 1 February 2007 (EST)
