Sam & Max: Freelance Police (1997-1998) was an animated series produced for airing on Fox Kids, a block of Saturday morning cartoons and children's programming on the FOX network. The series centered around Sam and Max, a dog and a lagomorph who fight crime as the Freelance Police. The series was based on the comic of the same name by Steve Purcell, which had previously spawned a videogame by LucasArts.

The series was met with lukewarm appeal. The Sam and Max comics were too mature to be marketable to the eight to twelve year-old demographic that the block appealed to and the voices were different from the video game, which turned off the cult fanbase that the video game created. The series produced 12 episodes, made up of 11-minute halves except for the first episode which only had one story in it. Also produced were several shorts that aired sporadically during the block.

The series was finally cancelled on April 25, 1998. Three video tape compilations were produced with episodes from the series, but they gradually went out of print. In 2007, cult DVD manufacturer Shout! Factory announced that they were working on a complete series DVD due to their own love of the characters and the renewed interest from the Sam & Max GameTap video games. The complete series DVD is due to be released on March 11, 2008.
