Evil space aliens destroy a moon base and then try to conquer Earth. The leader of the aliens, Zigra, kidnaps some children and begins causing earthquakes all around the world. Zigra also has a female companion who can put people into a deep sleep with her eyes. One of the kids has a telepathic bond with Gamera and summons the giant turtle after escaping from Zigra. Once Gamera arrives, Zigra transforms into a giant shark creature and the two monsters do battle.

• Opening Segment - Crow is finally unfrozen by Joel and isn't very happy about how he was treated.
• Segment One - Joel receives a transmission from the mad scientists. They invite him to return to Earth and participate in an underwater experiment. Joel declines the offer.
• Segment Two - Joel is depressed so Cambot plays some inspirational messages from callers to cheer him up.
• Segment Three - Joel and the bots make new year's resolutions and count down the seconds until 1989 begins.
• Closing Segment - Joel and the bots talk about the movie they just watched and the film that they will be viewing next week - yet another Gamera picture.

• This is the first episode in which the mad scientists speak to Joel.
• All the cast members are once again present in the theater segments.
• The countdown to 1989 did occur in real time since the episode aired on new year's day.
• Gamera vs. Zigra was produced by Sandy Frank, who was very upset over the treatment of his films on the show. As a result, he refused to renew the rights for their broadcast and the episodes featuring his movies could not be re-aired once the rights expired.
• Gamera vs. Zigra is one of the KTMA episodes that was re-done in a later season (3x16 - Gamera vs. Zigra)
