Pilot, Part 1

During a routine trip from Sydney to Los Angeles, Oceanic flight 815 is blown off course and crashes on a remote, deserted island. Convinced that rescue is coming soon, the surviving passengers set up camp on the beach. But when a terrifying howl comes from the jungle, it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary island.

See Pilot, Part 1 for full details.

Jack & Rose

Sitting in seat 23A, Jack mentions to the flight attendant that his drink isn't very strong. She gives him a small bottle of alcohol, assuming that he will add it to his drink. Instead, he pockets the new bottle and removes another, half-empty, from his pocket, and pours the rest into his cup. Finishing his drink, Jack tries to get up to the aisle, but Charlie rushes by pursued by several flight attendants. The aircraft shudders and the "fasten seatbelt" sign turns on, so Jack sits back down. He notices a woman - Rose - further along on the same row looking nervous. She is traveling with her husband, Bernard, who went to the bathroom in the rear of the plane. Jack tells her he'll keep her company until Bernard returns. Then the plane hits trouble.

Pilot, Part 2

Jack, along with fellow passengers Charlie and Kate, returns to the beach camp with the transceiver they've found. Sayid, a former military communications officer, gets the transceiver working but tells the others he can get better reception if they head to higher ground. When they get there, they pick up a mysterious broadcast.

See Pilot, Part 2 for full details.

Charlie

Charlie is on board the flight, his hands jittery. He looks back and sees a flight attendant talking to two other attendants and looking at him. The flight attendants start moving his way and Charlie gets up and quickly makes his way down the aisle, passing Jack, ducking into business class row and passing Shannon and Boone, and locks himself in a bathroom near the front of the plane. He takes out a baggy of heroin from his shoe and takes a hit, while a flight attendant asks him to open the door. Charlie dumps the baggy into the toilet and prepares to flush it, but the plane shudders violently. He quickly leaves the bathroom, dodges a runaway cart, and buckles himself into a seat.

Kate

Kate is on board the flight next to the Marshal. She drinks some juice, revealing that her hands are handcuffed. The plane shudders violently and a large case falls out of an overhead compartment, hitting the Marshal in the head and knocking him out. The oxygen masks deploy, but Kate is unable to reach them because she's handcuffed. She gets the keys off the Marshal, uncuffs herself, and puts the oxygen mask on and puts one on for the Marshal. Three rows behind them, the aircraft splits in two and the tail section plummets.

Tabula Rasa

Jack discovers that the injured man he has been trying to save is a U.S. Marshal. "Don't trust her, she's dangerous," the Marshal mutters repeatedly. When Jack asks him who "she" is, the Marshal shows him a picture of Kate, the woman Jack's been spending a lot of time with.

See Tabula Rasa for full details.

Kate

Kate awakes in an elderly man's barn with the owner pointing a shotgun at her. He winds up taking her on as an employee, offering her a fair wage and a roof to sleep under. We learn the farmer's name is Ray. As Kate attempts to leave one night, Ray stops her and pleads she wait until morning so he can drive Kate to the train station. The next morning, en route to the train station, the Marshal drives up to the farmer's truck. Kate realizes she has been sold out, and Ray apologizes to her, saying he needed the $23,000 reward money. Kate grabs the steering wheel and runs the truck off the road. She pulls Ray's body out of the burning wreckage and drags him to safety. Suddenly, the Marshal appears and captures Kate.

Walkabout

A series of flashbacks reveals a secret that Locke has kept hidden from the other passengers. Meanwhile, the bodies inside the plane need to be disposed of, but how? Jack decides the most effective way of doing so, but it's grisly. When the castaways realize that the food supply is running out, Locke has a suggestion.

See Walkabout for full details.

Locke

We learn Locke is planning on attending a "walkabout" in Australia. Locke is later shown having a telephone conversation with a woman named Helen. He tells her that he is going to Australia on the "Walkabout," and mentions he purchased two tickets. Helen tells Locke she can't go to Australia with him. They have a small argument that ends with Helen abruptly ending the call. The flashback culminates in Australia where Locke is trying to get on the bus for the "Walkabout." The guide says they are unable to take Locke along, claiming some sort of misrepresentation. The guide claims with his "condition," Locke is not able to go on the tour. The guide says they can fly Locke back to America on their own dime, but that is all they can do. As the guide walks out of the office, Locke yells at him, and it is revealed that Locke is paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair.

White Rabbit

While bordering on exhaustion, Jack repeatedly sees a mysterious man watching him from afar. He asks the other survivors if they've seen him, too, but no one has. Haunted by the strange vision, Jack follows the man, only to recognize him as someone to whom he was very close. Meanwhile, the water supply runs dangerously low - a situation that erupts into violence when someone steals the last remaining bottles.

See White Rabbit for full details.

Jack

A brief scene is shown from Jack's childhood where a friend of his is being beaten up by a bully, and Jack is on the ground. Jack is given the choice between staying down and not becoming further involved, or trying to help his friend. He stands up to try and help, but is knocked out with a punch. When Jack gets home, his father asks what happened. After explaining what happened, his father admonishes him, saying that he can't help everyone. He can't be a hero. He doesn't have what it takes. In a more recent flashback, we learn Jack did "something" to his father. Because of this, he is sent to Australia to bring dad home. He finds his way to the hotel where is father stayed, and in time he claims the body at the local morgue.

House of the Rising Sun

Jin, a Korean who speaks no English, assaults Michael, seemingly without provocation. Sayid resolves the conflict by handcuffing him to the wreckage. Jack's decision to move to the caves causes division among the castaways, and Jin's wife must decide whether or not to free her husband... at the cost of revealing a long-hidden secret.

See House of the Rising Sun for full details.

Sun

Sun is shown at a fancy party, where Jin is a waiter. Sun tells Jin she wants to run away to America to get married, but Jin wants to do it properly by asking Sun's father. Jin asks her father and he gives his permission, as long as Jin works for him. Sun doesn't seem happy about that. Many months later, Jin rushes in to their apartment and runs into the bathroom. Sun follows him and discovers that Jin is covered in blood. He says he was working and that he does whatever her father tells him to do. Later, Sun is planning to leave Jin. Sun is supposed to be going on a flight with Jin in the near future, but will disappear until her family thinks she is dead. When the time comes, Sun begins to walk away, but seems reluctant. She looks over at Jin, who holds up a flower like he used to. Sun walks back to Jin, and gets on the flight, which happens to be flight 815.

The Moth

Charlie goes through a personal crisis, while Jack is trapped by a cave-in. The castaways struggle to free Jack, while Kate and Sayid attempt to triangulate the French broadcast - but their exploration is thwarted by a mysterious attack.

See The Moth for full details.

Charlie

Charlie's brother Liam informs him they've been signed by a label. Liam tells Charlie that it was his songs that got them signed, that they'll look out for each other because that's what brothers do. Charlie makes Liam promise him that if things get too crazy that, no matter what, if he says they're done then they'll walk away. Sometime later at a show, Charlie goes backstage to find his brother who missed the sound check. He finds him completely high and tells him that, after tonight, they're canceling the rest of the tour and walking away. Charlie tells Liam he's killing himself and destroying Drive Shaft. Liam, enraged, tells Charlie that he himself is Drive Shaft and that nobody knows who Charlie is. Liam storms out, leaving Charlie alone with the drugs. Later, Charlie shows up on the doorstep of Liam's home in Sydney, Australia to deliver the news that they have a chance to get back on a label and make a comeback. Liam tells Charlie that he doesn't want to come back, but Charlie insists and tells him that they won't book Drive Shaft without him. Jess prods her husband to go through with the deal, and Sawyer lets David take home his $140,000 for the night to feel secure. Later, Sawyer shows up at a pool hall to talk with a man. The man tells Sawyer he has until noon tomorrow to come up with the $160,000 he gave Sawyer, plus 50% or he'll make Sawyer suffer. The next day Sawyer shows up at David and Jess' house and gets the $160,000 from them. But as Sawyer finishes the transaction, David and Jess' young son comes into the room. During his initial talk with Nadia, we discover that they were childhood friends and that Nadia had affections for Sayid. She tells Sayid that she's been tortured by his friends in the Republican Guard before and that she'll tell him nothing. Weeks later, Omar tells Sayid he has to execute Nadia. He helps Nadia escape via a leaving supply truck, but refuses to go with her as his family would be killed for his desertion. However, Omar appears and yells for the guard and draws his pistol, but Sayid shoots and kills him. Sayid then shoots himself and gives Nadia the gun in order to make it look like she shot them and tells her to leave now.

At this revelation, Jack tells the board that he needs to revise his statement. He tells them that he didn't come into the O.R. until well into the procedure, that one of the nurses warned him his father was operating under the influence, that his father had severed the patient's hepatic artery which, in his opinion, lead to her death.

The manager relents. Jason and another robber bring Kate and the manager to the money cage. Jason tells the manager that Kate is the one who set him up, the one who picked the bank and the vault, that the whole thing was her idea. She runs in her hand through her hair, revealing a bruise on her forehead, and Boone leaves. Boone goes to the local police station for help, but the officer tells him they need a little more to go on and can't help. The officer, again, tells Boone they can't help him, so he leaves. Boone goes to a dock at the harbor and talks to Bryan. He tells her he'd like to name their boy "Walt", after his dad. After Walt is born, Susan discusses with Michael how she wants to take Walt to Amsterdam with her. She has a job offer there to do international law and they've apparently talked about taking some time apart. She tells Michael she still loves him, but he hasn't worked in months and she can provide Walt everything he needs. He thinks Drive Shaft might be dead. Later, Charlie meets with Tommy at a pub and tells him he accepted a job offer from Frank to sell copiers. Tommy reminds Charlie he's been letting him get high on his own stash of heroin in exchange for Charlie stealing something of value that can be pawned off. Three days later, and without a heroin fix, Charlie is readying himself for his first day with a job and steals Churchill's cigarette case. At the meeting, Charlie tries to demonstrate the abilities of the copier. But, flustered and experiencing the effects of withdrawal, Charlie throws up on the copier. He returns to Lucy's home and tells her he made a mistake. She tells him her father's sales manager came to her house to return the cigarette case that the EMT pulled from his suit pocket at the hospital. Hibbs tells him that's why he's here, that he wants to make amends for the Tampa job. He gives him an envelope containing information on a man named Frank Duckett - a man he claims is the real Frank Sawyer, the man Sawyer has been looking for. Hibbs tells him he runs a shrimp truck in Australia. In Australia, Sawyer goes to Duckett's shrimp truck. Sawyer tries to work up the resolve to go through with killing him, but leaves. Sawyer ends up downing shots at a bar in Sydney. There he meets a fellow American, Christian Shephard. Sawyer has the bartender serve Christian and two begin to talk. Christian tells him he was the chief of surgery back in the States and talks about his son and that he wishes he could pick up a phone and call him, to tell him he loves him, but he can't because he's weak. He asks if Sawyer's business in Australia will ease his suffering. Christian tells him that unless he wants to end up like him, it's simple. Sawyer returns to Duckett's shrimp truck and shoots him. He begins reading his letter to Duckett, but Duckett asks him who he's talking about, that he was going to pay Hibbs back.

Locke

A younger Locke is working as an assistant manager at a large store and notices a woman watching him. After getting off work, Locke notices the same woman is following him in the parking lot. He catches up to her and asks her why she's following him. She tells him she's his mother. The two continue their discussion at a diner and the woman tells Locke he's very special and part of a design. Locke asks about his father, but the woman tells him he has no father. In the store's break room, Locke meets with a private detective he hired to investigate his supposed mother. He learns she is indeed his mother and has been institutionalized several times for a type of schizophrenia. He's also handed information about his father, Anthony Cooper. Cooper and Locke meet, and Cooper tells him he didn't know he existed until a year after he was born. Emily told him she wasn't going to have a baby at all and dropped off the face of the planet until she showed up again asking for money and telling him she put Locke up for adoption. He asks Locke if he wants to go hunting and Locke agrees. Later, Locke shows up at Cooper's house to shoot some birds again, but walks in and sees Cooper on a dialysis machine. Cooper tells him he's early and wasn't supposed to see this. His kidney is failing and he needs a transplant, but he's not going to let it spoil their day together. The two go hunting and Cooper tells Locke that, although his mother may be a little crazy, at least she brought the two of them together while they still have time. Later, Locke and Cooper are in a hospital being prepped for transplant surgery. Cooper tells him he still has time to back out, but Locke tells him it was meant to be. After the surgery, Locke wakes up in the hospital room but Cooper is missing. A nurse tells him Cooper already checked out and went back home under private care, but didn't leave a message for Locke. Emily shows up in his room and tells him she's sorry. She tells Locke that she needed some money and that it was all Cooper's idea to get his kidney. Locke cannot believe it and drives to Cooper's house, but the security guard tells him Cooper isn't seeing guests.

Jack

At Jack's wedding rehearsal, Sarah, Jack's bride-to-be, tells the gathered audience that, a little over two years ago, her tire blew out and she was hit head-on by an SUV when her car flipped into oncoming traffic. Her back was broken and the doctors said it was irreparable, but Jack promised he would fix her. Jack is the most committed man she's ever known and, because he fixed her, she will dance at their wedding. That night at the hotel bar, Jack plays a piano as Sarah enters. The two play the piano together and Sarah tells him he doesn't have to through with the wedding if he doesn't want to. Jack tells her he wants to, but he just hasn't thought up the right thing to say for his vows. Later that night, Jack ends up at the hotel pool drinking a bottle of alcohol. Christian Shephard shows up behind Jack and asks him how the water is before sitting down and dipping his feet in. Jack tells him Sarah wants them to write their own vows, but he can't write his. He tells his father he worries that he might not be the husband, or father, that he wants to be. He's worried that he asked Sarah to marry him because he saved her life. Christian tells him that commitment is what makes him tick, but he's just not good at letting go. At their wedding, Jack gives his vows to Sarah. He tells everyone that he didn't write any vows, that he couldn't. But he tells Sarah that he didn't fix her, that she fixed him. He loves her and always will.

The Greater Good

Sayid

Handcuffed by airport security at Heathrow, Sayid is led to a back room. Inside are two agents, Agent Melissa Cole from the Central Intelligence Agency and Agent Robbie Hewitt from the Australian Secret Intelligence Service. Agent Hewitt tells Sayid that 300 pounds of C-4 explosives where stolen from an army base outside of Melbourne the previous week. The men responsible were members of a terrorist cell intent on disrupting the coalition presence in Iraq. The agents got Sayid because he knows one of the terrorists, Essam Tazir. They tell Sayid he's going to help them because they know the whereabouts of Nadia. Later in Australia, Sayid "conveniently" runs into Essam at a mosque. Sayid tells him he's been traveling and inquires about a woman named Zahraa, but Essam tells him she died from a stray bomb. He invites Sayid to his apartment where Sayid meets Haddad and Yusef. As he talks to the group, Sayid takes notice of a smoke detector and disassembles it, revealing a listening device hidden inside. He drops the bug into a glass of water. Essam tells Haddad that Sayid was a member of the Republican Guard and knows things. Haddad suggests that it was fate that brought Sayid and Essam together at the mosque. Several weeks later Sayid tells Essam that he believes Haddad has selected a target as he's been asking him about explosives for the last two weeks. Haddad told Essam that morning that he was to be a martyr, but he tells Sayid he doesn't think he can do it. Later, Sayid meets with Agent Cole and Agent Hewitt at a dock. He tells them that he can get Essam to turn himself in and that he wants out, but he doesn't know where the C-4 is. Agent Cole tells him that Essam is worthless and the only way to find the C-4 is to wait for him to have a target to hit and that is why Sayid is going to convince him to go through with it. Sayid refuses, but Agent Cole reminds him about Nadia. If Sayid refuses, then they'll arrest her as an enemy combatant. Later, Sayid and Essam take a walk in Sydney. Essam explains to Sayid that he's not sure he can go through with it. He isn't afraid to die, but is worried about all the innocent lives. In response, Sayid tells him that innocent lives will be lost but in service of a greater good. He tells Essam he shouldn't just accept what happened to Zahraa and that he lost someone too. There needs to be consequences for those responsible and that is how he will honor her. Essam asks Sayid if he'll do this with him, and Sayid agrees. Haddad brings Sayid and Essam to a warehouse with an explosive-laden van inside. He tells the two what to do and, should they run into any problems, gives Essam a gun and leaves. Sayid and Essam get into the van, but Sayid tells him to stop, that he is working with the CIA. Essam asks why Sayid would do this to him and Sayid tells him that they know where to find the woman he lost, Nadia. Essam is angered that Sayid used him to find a woman and pulls the gun on Sayid. He tells Sayid that he was his brother, that he said this was for the greater good. He tells Sayid that he hopes this woman that he loves will make him whole again - and he shoots himself in the head. Once the authorities arrive, Agent Cole tells Sayid where Nadia is and gives him an Oceanic plane ticket to L.A. that leaves in two hours. Sayid inquires about Essam's body and Agent Hewitt tells him the body will be cremated as there's no one to claim the body. Sayid tells him that a Muslim man is supposed to be buried and that he'll claim the body. The two agents agree to change his flight on Oceanic to the next day.

In the parking garage, a doctor gets into his car and Kate pops up from the backseat saying "Hey, Tom". Tom asks her why she's here and Kate tells him Diane's dying of cancer and she wanted to see her. She needs his help. At his house at 2am that morning, Tom calls his hospital and gets Diane in for a 5am appointment for an MRI and so they have three hours to kill. The two drive out to a large tree on a farm where the two begin digging. Kate and Tom unearth a lunch box that Kate opens. Tom picks up a toy plane and tells Kate he can't believe he let her talk him into putting his plane in there. Kate tells him it was his idea, pulling out a cassette tape from 1989. They play the cassette in Tom's car and the two listen to younger versions of themselves. A young Kate asks why he's putting his plane in there, and a young Tom answers that he got it when he flew to Dallas by himself and it's cool. Young Tom says they're going to dig the time capsule up in twenty years, but a young Kate asks him how he knows they'll still be together. Young Tom tells her it's because they'll be married. Young Kate tells him she doesn't think so, that as soon as she gets her license they should get in a car and drive. Young Tom replies that she always wants to run away, and young Kate tells him he knows why. The tape finishes and the two kiss. Kate apologizes and Tom tells her they should get to the hospital. At the hospital, Diane is wheeled in on a gurney by a hospital worker for Tom. He motions the all clear to Kate and tells her he'll wait nearby in his office. Kate approaches Diane and asks her mom if she can hear her. She tells her mom that she's sorry for everything she's put her through. Diane starts calling for help, for somebody to help her, while Kate tries to calm her down. Kate rushes out of the room and into a security guard. She grabs his walkie-talkie and knocks him out as Tom arrives. She tells him she needs his car keys and the two head to the parking garage. The two get into his car and Kate tells him to get out as there is a police car blocking the exit, but Tom refuses. She takes off down the parking garage exit; crashing into the police car and pushing it out of the way while the cop fires at them, and takes off down the street. But she crashes into a car and comes to a stop, where she discovers that Tom has been shot and killed. As another police car closes in on the accident, she's forced to leave Tom's toy airplane behind and escape on foot.

In the bathroom, a man in a Hawaiian shirt asks Jin for a paper towel but realizes he doesn't speak English. The man then speaks Korean to Jin, telling Jin that he works for Mr. Paik and that he knows Jin is planning to run away. The girl tells him she doesn't care about "crap CD" or his "piece of crap band" and demands another hit of heroin. She sees him trying to hide a baggie in his hand and the two struggle for it. She beats Charlie, calling him pathetic, and finally leaves him there on the floor clutching the baggy of heroin.

Driving to the airport, Hurley's car breaks down on the side of the road. He gets out and starts running to the airport. Arriving at the check-in, the ticket agent tells Hurley he's confirmed for seat 20G, but the airline has a policy that a man of his size must purchase two tickets. Hurley agrees and gets a second seat, but the ticket agent tells him it appears his flight is already boarding in the Oceanic International terminal and he's currently in the domestic terminal. Hurley rushes through the airport and tries to cut to the front of a security checkpoint, but the security agent tells him to get to the back of the line. As Hurley heads back, Arzt is at the front frustrated with a man in front of him. After he gets through the checkpoint, Hurley flags down an old man in a scooter and offers him 1,600 dollars for his scooter. Using the scooter, Hurley makes it to his gate as they're closing the door. The gate agent tells him the jet way is closed, but Hurley pleads with her to let him on the plane.
