Basic Information
Before Oceanic 815
Harper was married to Goodwin and they lived together at the barracks in the central part of the island. Harper was a therapist, having earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Columbia University and a master's from Yale University, and had regular appointments with the members of their community, especially new members who might find it difficult adjusting to life on the island. Even though Harper's job was to help people, she had a very cold personality and came across very bitter. This is the exact impression Juliet Burke got when she arrived on the island and met Harper for the first time.
Juliet had regular appointments with Harper, but they didn't like each other very much. This only became worse when Harper discovered that Juliet was having an affair with Goodwin. During one of their sessions, Harper told Juliet that she had followed her and Goodwin and watched them making loving. She knew about the affair and asked Juliet to back off since she didn't want Goodwin to get hurt. Juliet told her that she would never hurt Goodwin. However, Harper wasn't referring to Juliet, she was afraid that their leader, Benjamin Linus, would harm Goodwin because he wanted Juliet for himself.
Harper's marriage to Goodwin had fallen apart but they still stayed together, even though he slept on the couch for over a year. He continued his relationship with Juliet and Harper continued to put up with it, but was still fearful of what Ben might do.
After Oceanic 815
On the day of the crash of Oceanic flight 815, Ben sent Goodwin and Ethan to the two seperate crash sites. Ethan was sent to the fuselage and Goodwin to the tail-section. Ben wanted them to blend in with the survivors of the crash and to pretend to have also been on the plane. Harper watched as Ben gave the orders and as Goodwin ran off, she knew this was Ben's way of getting Goodwin away from Juliet and, at the same time, putting him in a dangerous position.
Harper was right to be concerned about Ben's intentions, as after Goodwin's mission was completed, Ben had him stay with the survivors until Ana-Lucia Cortez figured out who he was and killed him.
About two months later, after the Others had abandoned the barracks and moved to the temple, Harper had to deliver a message from Ben to Juliet, who had now joined forces with Jack Shephard and the other survivors. Daniel Faraday and Charlotte Lewis were on their way to the Tempest, an electrical station that powers the island. This station could also be used to release a gas that would kill everyone on the island. Harper found Juliet in the jungle and delivered the message - Juliet was to stop Daniel and Charlotte from releasing the gas, by any means necessary. Jack arrived on the scene and asked Harper who she was. She told him she was an old friend of Juliet's. Jack and Juliet were distracted by whispers in the jungle and when they looked again, Harper had disappeared. When Juliet eventually arrived at the Tempest to stop Daniel and Charlotte, she found that they were actually rendering the gas inert so that Ben couldn't use it to kill anyone. Ben had used Harper to lie to Juliet about Daniel and Charlotte's mission.
