Episode Breakdown

  • Monologue: With Sunday being the Super Bowl, Dave reminds everyone that Janet Jackson won't be performing in the half-time show, so the only boob on CBS will be him. He also brings up the fact that 25 years ago on February 1, 1982, he and Paul Shaffer started on NBC at Late Night and explains that the only reason why he's still doing it is because he enjoys firing people so much.
  • Know Your Current Events: The categories for the night's show are: Know Your Current Events, Know Your Cuts of Meat, Know Your Academy Award Nominees, Know Your Long Shot 2008 Presidential Candidates, Know Your Super Bowl XLI and Know Your David Letterman 25 Years in Late Night. KYCM is knocked out because Dave gives the first player the box of meat when she says it's her 40th birthday, as well as free dinner at a restaurant for playing KYCE. Dave moves onto another contestant who plays KYAAM and also gets a free dinner. Dave goes on to one last contestant who keeps asking to do categories which aren't on the card. Eventually Dave cuts his losses and throws to a commercial.
    • KYCE #1: "What does George Bush want to reduce by 20% in the next ten years?"
      • Answer: "Hillary's dependence on pantsuits."
    • KYCE #2: "What is predicted if the groundhog sees his shadow tomorrow?"
      • Answer: "Six more weeks of Trump and Rosie fighting."
    • KYAAM #1: "What maniacal ruler, who enjoyed feasting on human flesh, is the subject of one of the nominated films?"
      • Answer: "Queen Elizabeth."
    • KYAAM #2: "How did Penelope Cruz prepare for her role in Volver?"
      • Answer: "We have no idea. We just wanted to look at her."
  • Great Moments in Presidential Speeches: "Our panelists are about to fall out, wonderin'... alright, uh... is that an old guy said you're just not a potted plant."
  • Late Show Top Ten: Top Ten Things I've Learned Working for Dave Letterman. Each entry in the list is delivered by an employee of the show.
  1. He'll always answer to "Hey, Asshole."
  2. I have wasted my life.
  3. I love working for Dave Letterman. He is an honorable man. (Actually a long string of Spanish calling Dave crazy, among other things.)
  4. Dave thinks everyone on the staff is named Doug.
  5. I'm declining to comment on the advice of my attorney.
  6. He may be demanding, he may be difficult, but at the end of the day, he's a real dick.
  7. Just like Britney—never wears underpants.
  8. It wouldn't be Monday without Dave's fresh-baked banana nut muffins.
  9. If Regis calls, Dave's "in a meeting."
  10. Heart bypass surgery is a good cover for a facelift and hair plugs.
  • Bill Murray Interview: Bill Murray, the first guest of both Late Show and Late Night, comes out wearing a tuxedo and top hat carrying a bottle of champagne. He was under the impression that he was coming to a party that was classy and a big deal. The topic of the Super Bowl comes up eventually, and Murray decides to hold a friendly bet with Dave over the outcome of the game since he's from Chicago and Dave is from Indianapolis. Dave offers to match Murray's 2000 Chicago hot dogs with 2000 Indianapolis hot dogs, but clearly misses the spirit of the bet. They crack open the champagne and Murray mentions that he really wants to go to the game but he can't secure enough tickets for everyone who wants tickets in his family. As of yet, he has no tickets, and Dave assures him that he doesn't have anything to do with the ticketing situation. Murray asks Dave to call Les Moonves about tickets and Dave obliges him. Somehow, Dave manages to get Moonves on the phone. They chat for a bit, and eventually Moonves asks if Dave would like to go to the game with him. Murray instantly starts doing a victory dance but Dave dashes that by saying he'll be busy that weekend. Murray is put on the phone and he tries to play himself off as Dave's brother Bill but eventually comes clean. Moonves happily accommodates Murray's request for 6 tickets.
  • Hello Deli: Rupert Jee has a midseason replacement series on CBS all about Hello Deli called "Cold Cutz." Dave shows a clip of the show where Rupert and Dan getting locked in the meat locker and reminisce about the first time they met.
  • Act 5: Alan Kalter says "This is A-Dog saying 'Play it cool... stay in school. Peace out."
  • LeBron James Interview: All-Star forward and player for the Cleveland Cavaliers comes out to talk about being the leading vote-getter for the NBA all-star game, a surprising feat because voting was open internationally and Yao Ming is usually given a hefty lead by Chinese fans. Dave also mentions Carmello Anthony, a draftee in the same year as James, getting tossed out of the league for getting in a fight on the court. Dave suggests that there should be more fighting because it works for the NHL and is "good fun." Moving on from that, they talk about the new official game ball Spalding introduced which was made of synthetic polymers rather than leather without talking to players about it. James refers to is as a "ball from space" and is grateful that the NBA went back to the old ball.

Notes

  • Alan Kalter's Intro: "Hard Partying Starlet: David Letterman."
  • Alan Kalter's Outro: "Gin Granny?"
