KION is the call sign for the CBS affiliate in the Monetery/Salinas, California market. Licensed to Monterey, it broadcasts on digital channel 32 while using 46 as virtual. It bills itself as CBS 5/46 as it is seen on channel 5 on most Monterey/Salinas cable systems.
KION first went on the air in 1969 as KMST/channel 46 (analog). It has been a CBS affiliate from the start. It changed calls to KCCI in 1990 and managed Fox affiliate KCBA/channel 35 under a local marketing agreement. In 2000, they changed calls to KION and shared carriage of UPN shows with KCBA. In 2006 after UPN shut down and merged with the WB to become to CW, KION opened a digital subcarrier to air the CW network.
