Hannibal — Season Two

Tome-wan is the twelfth episode of the second season of Hannibal, and the twenty-fifth episode overall.

Plot Overview

As Hannibal tries to persuade Will to take action on Mason, Will attempts to turns the tables by directing Hannibal's attention to Mason. Unfortunately, Mason doesn't sit around and sets his own plan in motion against Lecter. Impatient by Will's progress, Jack tracks down an important witness.

• Jack has successfully found Bedelia.

• After failing to use Mason to snare Hannibal, Will suggests Hannibal reveal himself to Jack as the Chesapeake Ripper.

Characters

• Hannibal has Mason cuts pieces of his face and feed it to Will's dogs and after convincing him to eat his own nose, Hannibal breaks Mason's neck, paralysing him.

• Jack goes to Mason hoping to get a testimony, but instead Mason lies to protect Hannibal and denies ever meeting Will. However, he effectively hopes to one "repay" Hannibal.

Allusions and References

• Will tells Jack of Hannibal, "It's as though committing murders has purged him of lesser rudeness." Clarice Starling makes a near verbatim observation in The Silence of the Lambs.

Memorable Moments

• Putting him under the influence of drugs, Hannibal persuades Mason to cut off slices of his face and feed it to Will's dogs.

• Will: Can you explain my actions? Can you posit my intentions? What would be your theory of my mind?

Hannibal: I have an understanding of your state of mind. You understand mine. We're just alike. This gives you the capacity to deceive me and be deceived by me.

Will: I'm not deceiving you, Dr Lecter. I'm just pointing out the snare around your neck. What you do about it is entirely up to you.

• Hannibal: Why did you tell Mason Verger I want to kill him?

Will: I was curious what would happen. It's true, isn't it? You do want to kill him. Or you want me to kill him. Either way, you'd like him dead. I'm just... giving you a little nudge.

Hannibal: Mason is discourteous. And discourtesy is unspeakably ugly to me.

Will: Are you thinking about eating him?

Hannibal: Whenever feasible, one should always try to eat the rude.

• Jack: Do you find that Dr Lecter's therapy has been helpful to you?

Mason: I've benefited greatly from Dr Lecter's therapy. I'm still benefiting from it. I will always be grateful for how he's helped me. I only hope that I may repay him one day.
