- The character has a notably different relationship to Hannibal in the series versus the books. In the novels, he appears only in Red Dragon in which he had consulted with Hannibal on the Chesapeake Ripper. It was only through the discovery of his Wound Man illustration that he made the connection at which point he was nearly disembowelled by an linoleum knife. He sees a now imprisoned Hannibal again during the Tooth Fairy case, but once it's resolved, he never makes contact with him again and is only briefly referred to in the subsequent novel The Silence of the Lambs.
- Whenever Will studies a scene, there is a shot of an illuminated pendulum swinging in black. This is an illusion to a description in Red Dragon when he is at the Leeds house:
- He tried to be still inside. In his mind a silver pendulum swung in darkness. He waited until the pendulum was still.
