Days of our Lives is NBC's longest running soap opera, set in the fictional town of Salem in an unknown state. The series is well known for its epigram, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of our Lives." The show currently ranks in last place against the other three daytime soap operas, due to competing directly against both The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful and is continually preempted by sporting and other coverage on NBC.
