Category talk:Sequel

From The TV IV
Jump to: navigation, search

I know it's rare for most TV shows to be called "sequels," but that's because very few spin-offs truly are sequels. Most spin-offs take one character (regular or guest) and recast him or her in a new setting, whereas, by definition, a "sequel" continues the events of another story. For instance, I wouldn't call Frasier a sequel to Cheers, because the events of the former don't truly continue the events of the latter. In a sense, some (but by no means most or all) of the events of Cheers are merely a backstory for the main character of Frasier. Certainly Mork and Mindy and Laverne and Shirley are not sequels of Happy Days, although both are spin-offs, as are The Jeffersons and Maude from All in the Family or The Bionic Woman from The Six Million Dollar Man. However, there have been some notable examples of series which are spin-offs and also sequels or prequels: After M*A*S*H, Three's a Crowd, The Golden Palace, even The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and I've heard them referred to as such, and because of that I think it's perfectly fair to allow TV series in this category. Hopefully, it won't be overused or misused (as the locations settings and such have not yet been overused), and if that hope turns out to be inaccurate, we can worry about it when it starts. -- JCaesartalk 21:59, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
