Season One of Bleach premiered on October 5, 2004. This debut season of Bleach consists of one storyline as well as the beginning of a second.
Episodes 1–20, "The Substitute" or "Agent of the Shinigami" in Japanese, introduce many of the main characters, particularly Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki, a soul reaper who funnels nearly all of her power into Ichigo so that he can save his family from a hollow. From then on, Ichigo is drafted into service of fighting hollows and unknowingly imbues many of his friends and family members with enhanced spiritual powers. The arc ends when Rukia is brought back to the soul society in order to stand trial for the actions which empowered Ichigo. Ichigo is trained and sent off with several of his compatriots into the soul society on a rescue mission.
Episodes 21–26, "Soul Society: The Sneak Entry," pick up the rescue mission in the soul society and ends shortly after the team breach the magic barrier surrounding the inner city. The remaining 15 episodes of the storyline make up the first half of the second season.
This season began airing in English on Adult Swim on September 8, 2006, after being licensed by Viz Media in early 2006, and finished on March 3, 2007. The series was broadcast Sundays at 12:30AM without breaks until the end of the second season.
