Season One of Bleach premiered on October 5, 2004 and is titled "The Substitute." Although the series is run without breaks like Western television seasons, episodes are grouped into storylines and considered "seasons" in the right.

"The Substitute" or "Agent of the Shinigami" in Japanese, introduce many of the main characters, particularly Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki, a soul reaper who funnels nearly all of her power into Ichigo so that he can save his family from a hollow. From then on, Ichigo is drafted into service of fighting hollows and unknowingly imbues many of his friends and family members with enhanced spiritual powers. The arc ends when Rukia is brought back to the soul society in order to stand trial for the actions which empowered Ichigo. Ichigo is trained and sent off with several of his compatriots into the soul society on a rescue mission.

This season began airing in English on Adult Swim on September 8, 2006, after being licensed by Viz Media in early 2006, and finished on January 26, 2007. The series was broadcast Sundays at 12:30AM without breaks for the first 52 episodes.
