Plot Overview
In order to prove that he is the superior fighter, Uryu crushes some hollow bait and tells Ichigo that the one to kill the most hollows in 24 hours will be the winner. Ichigo protests bringing so much danger to the town, but Uryu assures him that he can kill every hollow that appears, so no one will get hurt. He kills the first one to appear and makes Ichigo run off to protect Yuzu and Karin with an offhand remark about how hollows are attracted to those with high spirit energy.
Across the town, those with high amounts of spirit energy sense the hollows emerging, including Orihime, Tatsuki, Karin and Urahara. Rukia's pager is going haywire and she considers it to be haywire until she sees that seven hollows are attacking at the same time. Chad is attacked by a hollow that he can't quite see entirely and runs away to draw it away from the crowd. He winds up on the soccer field with Karin when the hollow catches up with him. Since Karin can see it, they work together to get away from it without harm. Chad gets knocked unconscious and Karin is forced to wail on her friends to get them to run away from the hollow. He eventually gets backc up after an epiphany involving an older relative and his right arm transforms in such a way that he can punch the hollow to death. He kills the now fully visible hollow and falls over in exhaustion. Karin kicks him in the head for saying it's good that he got hurt instead of her and goes off to get her father.
Meanwhile, at the dojo, another hollow appears with the intent to attack Tatsuki and Orihime.

- 1x04 - Cursed Parakeet: Karin is referring to the "possessed" talking cockatiel that turned out to be inhabited by the soul of a small child. Chad assumed protection over the bird and helped send him on to the afterlife with Ichigo.
- Karin: You're Ichigo's friend, right? The cockatiel's uncle?
