Plot Overview

School is out for summer vacation and Keigo tries to get everyone to come with him for 10 days of debauchery at the beach, but everyone bails on him. Ichigo is distraught by the fact that everyone else can't remember Rukia, except for Orihime who confronts him about what happened to her and no one else remembers. Ichigo vows that he needs to rescue Rukia because his conversation with Orihime has convinced him that she belongs in the mortal realm.

In the soul society, Renji checks on Rukia and she asks if she's really going to die. Renji makes a bad joke about how she'll likely be executed immediately before back tracking and telling her that surely her brother is pleading for clemency as they speak. But, Rukia isn't so certain. In the 40 years that have passed since the Kuchiki clan took her in, Byakuya has not once looked at her.

Below Urahara's shop are subterranean training grounds which take up a massive amount of space. In those grounds, Ichigo's training begins with Urahara popping Ichigo's soul out of his body. But, because his powers were drained out of him by his near fatal encounter with Renji and Byakuya, his soul is perhaps even weaker than his normal human form. Ichigo is told to fight Ururu, who is surprising formidable for a little girl. He gets back up after a punch and eventually finds that his speed is starting to return and that he can dodge punches. After being kicked in the head, Urahara declares his first lesson to be complete and that his spirit energy has been restored. To celebrate his victory, Urahara has Tessai cut off Ichigo's chain of fate.

Meanwhile, Orihime and Chad are told by Yoruichi that they need training to help back up Ichigo. They're offered a choice in whether or not they would like to go with Ichigo to the soul society, but only if they accept his lessons. The offer is also extended to Uryu, who intends to train on his own by a secluded waterfall.

Ichigo's second lesson is to regain his soul reaper powers before his chain encroaches into his chest. A large hole appears beneath him and Ichigo finds himself at the bottom, with his arms bound completely. He has 72 hours to climb the shaft without the use of his arms to get his powers back.
