Angel — Season One

Five by Five is the eighteenth episode of the first season of Angel. Faith arrives in Los Angeles after fleeing from Sunnydale.

Plot Overview

Having fled Sunnydale, rouge Slayer Faith comes to Los Angeles where she is soon noticed by Wolfram & Hart. Having gotten tired of Angel getting in their hair, they hire her out for her abilities to slay Angel.

• Wolfram & Hart: Angel once again thwarts Wolfram & Hart when he convinces a gang member to testify against one of Wolfram's clients, despite the firm's attempts to snuff out Marquez's friends. They hire Faith to kill Angel for them.

Characters

• Angel: The gypsy that Angel killed which ultimately caused the curse put on his head was a gift from Darla. So, in essence, Darla is the reason why Angel's soul was returned to him. Once she learnt of this, she cast him out into the streets.

Referbacks

• BtVS - 3x22 - Graduation Day: Faith spent part of season four of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a coma caused by her injuries from being stabbed by Buffy.

Angel: I thought she was in a coma.

• BtVS - 3x15 - Consequences: Angel clubbed Faith over the head and brought her back to his home in Sunnydale where he attempted to reason with her and bring her back to the side of sanity. He was making good progress when Wesley and others burst in, ensnared Angel and beat him while freeing Faith. They attempted to cart her off to England, but she escaped from them.

Angel: I was pulling her back from the brink when some British guy kidnapped her and made damn sure she'd never trust a living soul.

• 1x01 - City Of: Angel tossed Russell Winters out a window after he killed his first client. Russell, of course, was a vampire. So, the direct sunlight dusted his body before he hit the ground.

The Show

• First Appearance: This episode marks the first appearance of Faith in the series. She is the seventh character to crossover to Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she last appeared in "Who Are You?", an episode in which Faith and Buffy switched bodies.

Behind the Scenes

• Ratings: On its first airing, this episode scored a 4.9/8 in the overnight Nielsen ratings. It was ranked 3rd out of the 15 WB shows which aired that week.

Allusions and References

• Five By Five: The title of the episode is taken from a radio operator terminology meaning that the incoming transmission's signal is the strongest and clearest possible. It later transformed into a way of saying "everything is okay." The term is now antiquated and rarely used in the modern era, but Faith has used it as something of a catchphrase in her previous appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Memorable Moments

• As Angel and Faith fight in the rain, Wesley races down the stairs with a knife to kill Faith once and for all. When he arrives on the street, he finds Faith crying, demanding that Angel kill her. He drops his knife and the credits roll.

• Cordelia:: Wesley, you don't change a guy like that. In fact, generally speaking, you don't change a guy. What you see is what you get. Scratch the surface and what do you find? More surface.

Wesley: One could have said that about Angel.

Angel: Well, you know, she tried to shoot my own personal back, so, yeah.

• Wesley: She's not a demon, Angel. She's a sick, sick girl. If there's even a chance she can be reasoned with

Angel: There was. Last year I had a shot at saving her. I was pulling her back from the brink when some British guy kidnapped her and made damn sure she'd never trust a living soul.

Cordelia: Angel, it's not Wesley's fault that some British guy ruined your... Oh, wait. (to Wesley) That was you. (to Angel) Go on.

• Angel: Too bad the body burned up before it hit the ground. I might've needed a good lawyer.

Lindsey: I'm sorry. We only handle a certain class of clientele.

Angel: I'm sure that I killed enough people to qualify.

• Cordelia: (to Dennis about Wesley) Don't worry. Hell would freeze over before I have sex with him.

• Wesley: I was your Watcher, Faith. I know the real you. And even if you kill me there's just one thing I want you to remember.

Faith: What's that, love?

Wesley: You... are a piece of shi--

(Faith shoves the rag back in his mouth)

• Faith: (torturing Wesley) I think I wanna hear you scream.

Wesley: You never will.
