Plot Overview

The girl jumps down from the roof and introduces herself and her partner as Yuzuriha Nekoi and Kusanagi Shiyu. They compliment Syaoran and Kurogane's fighting styles. After Fai chimes in, Yuzuriha realizes she's heard of them already. Kurogane and Syaoran return to the café, where Kurogane is incredibly cross with Fai, because the names that Fai put down on the application when they entered Ōto where "Big Puppy" and "Little Puppy" for Kurogane and Syaoran, and "Big Kitty" and "Little Kitty" for Fai and Sakura.

Yuzuriha and Kusangi come in, and Fai invites them to have some cake. While eating, the pair explains that oni have different ranks, and that every hunter hopes to destroy he most powerful oni, an I-1 oni. When Fai mentions that the oni they killed the other night was a middle-ranked oni, Yuzuriha notes that only higher-ranked oni should be able to enter people's homes. Suddenly, they sense an oni nearby. Instead of paying for the cake, Fai asks that they bring him more information instead. After the two leave, Syaoran asks Mokona about the feather. It senses something faint, but doesn't know from where. Mokona promises to do its best.

Sakura brings some hot chocolate to Syaoran in his room, and apologizes for saying he doesn't know her back when she first woke up. She says he's done a lot for her, and he knows a lot about her from when they were young. She starts asking when they met. Suddenly, she falls over, and she can't remember what they were talking about. Fai and Kurogane are listening outside. Fai reveals that even if Sakura manages to remember something about her relationship with Syaoran on her own, it will immediately be erased from her mind. This is part of the price paid to Yūko. As Syaoran cradles Sakura in his lap, oni appear outside the bedroom window.

Sakura oversleeps the next morning, and when she goes downstairs, Syaoran and Kurogane have already gone to City Hall to get their reward money for the oni they killed last night. Fai serves Sakura breakfast and tells her the best way she can help Syaoran is by smiling for him.

Meanwhile, Syaoran, Kurogane, and Mokona are at City Hall. The receptionist tells them that they don't need to come down there for money anymore, since it will be automatically deposited into their account. She also tells them that they can come down there to ask any questions they have. When Syaoran asks if any strange occurrences have been happening, she sends them to the Information Booth in another part of town. Kurogane is annoyed at the runaround.

They arrive at a house, where they meet the informant Eri. She tells them that the oni's movements have been strange, some have been sighted during the day, and a new breed has shown up. She gives them the address of the person who saw this new oni, at a bar named Clover. Fai and Kurogane head to the bar while Syaoran and Sakura staff the café. Upstairs, Mokona talks to Yūko, thanking her for the fondant au chocolat. When it tells her that Fai forced Kurogane to eat some, she says he owes her something then anyway.

Walking to the bar, Fai and Kurogane are fighting again. Fai suddenly gets serious, and attacks an oni that has appeared right behind Kurogane! Fai mentions that this road is not supposed to have oni.

Syaoran and Sakura are talking back at the café, when Mokona proudly shows them the name of the shop. Sakura remembers what Fai said to her earlier, and realizes that seeing Syaoran smile makes her happy, too.

Back on the street, Fai and Kurogane have been completely surrounded by powerful onis.

Notes

Locations

  • Ōto

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • Syaoran and Kurogane become well-known in Ōto as oni hunters.
  • "The Cat's Eye Café" opens.
  • Kurogane and Fai are attacked by dangerous oni.

Characters

  • Sakura starts to remember her and Syaoran meeting as children, but the thought is stricken from her mind. It turns out that even if Sakura tries to remember something about her and Syaoran's prior relationship, it will be immediately erased from her memory. This is a consequence of the deal made with Yūko, a price paid by both Syaoran and Sakura.

Referbacks

  • Syaoran recalls Fai filling out the application in 1x17.
  • Sakura apologizes for what she said to Syaoran in 1x06, about him doing all these things to get the feather back despite the fact that he didn't know her.
  • Mokona mentions the fondant au chocolat from 1x17 when talking to Yūko.

Trivia

Bumper

  • Yūko

Nicknames

  • Fai and Mokona both call Kurogane "Kuro-pon"
  • When Fai filled out the application in 1x17, he needed to fill in names but he didn't know the writing system for Ōto Country. So he drew pictures instead, and names were assigned based on that. Kurogane became "Big Puppy", Syaoran became "Little Puppy", Fai was "Big Kitty", and Sakura was "Little Kitty". Kurogane is incredibly pissed.

Allusions and References

CLAMP References

  • Duklyon: CLAMP School Defenders: Eri, Kentarou, and Takeshi are the informants in charge of the "Information Booth" in Ōto. Eri is also the leader here and does most of the talking.

Real World References

  • A traditional Japanese belief is that when you sneeze, it is because someone is talking about you elsewhere. So when Kurogane sneezes while he and Syaoran are at City Hall, he says Fai is spreading gossip about him again (which he was). Kurogane sneezes again later when he and Fai are going to the bar. This time, Mokona is talking about Kurogane with Yūko.
  • Yūko sent the fondant au chocolat as a Valentine's Day present, and she expects a White Day present in return from Kurogane and the others. Celebrated in Japan on March 14, men are expected to give gifts in return for the gifts they received on Valentine's Day. Traditionally this was meant to be an acceptance/rejection of the girl's declaration of affection, but over time it has evolved into a cultural obligation (which is what Yūko is counting on).

Memorable Moments

  • Fai's drawings of "Big Puppy" and "Little Puppy"
