Negan's return gives Simon his chance to coordinate a dethroning.

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • It's revealed Negan found Laura who gave up Dwight as traitor. Instead, Negan uses him to expose Simon's coup and to deliver Rick into a trap, all while keeping Dwight as his new right-hand man.
  • Because of Simon's actions, Negan is forced now to wipe out the entirety of the Hilltop.
  • Gregory returns to the Hilltop with the map Dwight gave him and is put back in holding.
  • Simon's plans are thwarted and is killed. Negan then puts his reanimated body on the fence.
  • After being leaving Aaron to fend for himself in the woods, they find him again as he pleads for them to fight for their own freedom.

Characters

  • Rick reads the letter Carl wrote for him.
  • Rosita and Daryl take Eugene, but make it clear he will live only because they'll need him. He makes an escape and returns to the factory to double down on his commitment to the Saviors and continues production.
  • Michonne reads Carl's letter to Negan. Negan rejects the plea for peace and moves forward with his plan.

  • Simon and Gregory are talking over a bottle of tequila, just as promised in "The Other Side".

  • Chandler Riggs's name is reinserted into the main cast due to the use of voice. This is the second time cast for written out characters from earlier in the season have been readded, the first being in Season 5 with "Forget".

Memorable Moments

  • Thinking Dwight is on his side, Simon is surprised to hear him whistle and soon sees Negan emerge. This is soon followed by those he gathered for the insurgence being gunned down.
  • The fight between Negan and Simon, ending in an enraged Negan strangling Simon until he crushes his throat.
  • After being offered his position as his right-hand man, Dwight goes into his quarters to see Laura.
