Season Nine of The Walking Dead premiered on October 7, 2018.

The season will introduce the antagonists the Whisperers.

Executive Producer Angela Kang steps in as the series showrunner as of this season.

After it was reported earlier in the year, it was confirmed at the 2019 SDCC that this will be the last season for Andrew Lincoln, although he has cryptically added that his relationship with the character of Rick Grimes is far from over. The network has promoted the season as "Rick Grimes' Final Episodes". Lauren Cohan was in a public contract negotiation with an agreement having been reached just prior to filming. After the reports of Lincoln's departure, there were unsubstantiated claims of Cohan also leaving. While she is set to appear in only six episodes, all indications are that she will likely return for Season Ten.

The season will also see the return of former cast members, as it's been confirmed there will be appearances from Jon Bernthal, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Scott Wilson while Michael Cudlitz is set to direct the seventh episode.

In keeping with the theme of a new beginning, this season will feature a dramatically different opening title sequence.
