The TV IV:Proposals/Music Pages
I'm co-opting this old proposal to get a consensus on pages dedicated to musicians and bands. As far as I know, there isn't a resource which takes particular musicians/bands and lists all of their appearances as musical guests. I think we can capitalize off of this, but only if we make sure that everything is done the same way.
You can find my formatting ideas on these two pages:
- Smashing Pumpkins (Band)
- Billy Corgan (Solo Artist)
There are three options on each page for how to format the musical performances table. I'm leaning towards "Condensed BR" at the moment (see below), and so are several admins. Before I go into making the templates, I want to know what the general population of the wiki thinks about this idea and if there are any additions I should make to the top-right template or the performances table.
Series | Song Title | Episode | Airdate |
---|---|---|---|
Saturday Night Live | "Cherub Rock" "Today" |
Christian Slater/Smashing Pumpkins | October 30, 1993 |
MTV Video Music Awards | "Disarm" | 1994 MTV Video Music Awards | September 8, 1994 |
I must stress that this table is not meant to list songs that appear as background music. That doesn't strike me as particularly useful on this wiki and there are other resources for that anyway. --IndieRockLance 03:55, 11 March 2008 (EDT)

There is really great music being utilized on tv and sometimes I have no idea what I'm listening to. Plus, trying to find this music is an enormous struggle. That's why there should be a record of the music used. --Jessicafrey 22:08, 4 October 2006 (EDT)
- In most episode pages, the music is listed as trivia or under the notes section. In some rare cases like Veronica Mars or House, M.D., they do utilize a full listing of music used in the episode but sometimes that can get unwieldy. I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but it sounds like that sort of thing is already going on. As for something like bands playing on late night shows or whatever, I've been thinking about how useful that sort of thing would be (there used to be an entry for The Sex Pistols, but I guess it was deleted) but haven't gotten around to putting it into practice. --IndieRockLance 01:18, 5 October 2006 (EDT)
- Did it get deleted? I know Sid Vicious' page is still there, but you're right, there are no further references to the Sex Pistols. (Then again, if I'm not mistaken, don't they have just one TV appearance as a group? The famous Today appearance where they just sneered and cursed at the host. So maybe it makes sense not to give them their own page.) However, The Pretenders have their own page still, so it's not unreasonable to have pages for music bands. -- JCaesartalk 18:56, 25 January 2007 (EST)
- Totally unrelated, but the Sex Pistols did make an appearance on the Manchester music show So It Goes in 1976. --IndieRockLance 03:55, 11 March 2008 (EDT)

Should the music be listed on a separate page, such as Supernatural/Music, or in the notes section for each episode? Some consistency would be nice. —Naddy 16:20, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- I think it's fine to use both methods or to vary it depending on how much data is available for the show. If only a couple songs are known putting it in the notes section is better but if most or all are known a full list is a good idea. There is definitely a demand for the overall lists as the few we have are among the most popular pages on the site. --The-jam 17:04, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
