The Soup is a satire program that airs on E! For its first four episodes it was known as What The...? Awards. It then tweaked its format to be similar to a previous E! show, Talk Soup, and renamed to reflect this.
Host Joel McHale shows clips of the best/worst pop culture items of the week, mostly from TV shows. He adds his own commentary on the clips when he introduces them. There are recurring segments, including Chat Stew (clips from talk shows), Reality Show Clip Time and The Clip of the Week. Some of the humor in the show comes from making random references to previous clips that were considered humorous.
The show has been spun-off into three themed versions with the same general format that air on sister networks to E!:
- The Dish, hosted by Danielle Fishel, airs on Style Network and focuses on fashion, lifestyle and entertainment.
- Sports Soup, hosted by Matt Iseman, airs on Versus, focuses on sports
- Web Soup, hosted by Chris Hardwick, airs on G4, focuses on internet videos
Additionally, a British version of the show aired, titled Celebrity Soup, which was hosted by Iain Lee and aired on the UK version of E!
