- "Make Money Fast" scheme: The early online pyramid scheme that, per some sources, was the likely inspiration for Homer's "Happy Dude" telemarketing scheme. (An email is sent and its readers encouraged to forward $1 each to a list of people provided in the email, and to add their own name and address to the bottom of the list after deleting the name and address at the top.)
- Rebel Without a Cause: The main plot – Lisa falling for Nelson – is inspired by the legendary 1955 movie starring James Dean, about a girl from a conservative family falling for a "bad boy."
- Winston Churchill: Lisa remarking that Nelson is "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" is a la Churchill describing the Soviet Union during World War II.
