2007 is the twelfth year of The Daily Show and began on January 8, 2007. This year is notable for having been afflicted by the Writers Guild strike. When the strike began on November 2, 2007, the show was forced to go dark due to its reliance on timely material written on the day of the broadcast. As a result, the season effectively ended with the November 1st episode featuring Jerry Seinfeld as the guest.
As the strike wore on, The Daily Show became a prominent figure in negotiations. At one point, the WGA East president referred to Stewart as like Walter Cronkite reporting on the war in Vietnam and believed that having it off the air, while damaging to the general public, was important for negotiating the guild's cause. Stewart continued paying the staffs for both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report through the end of the year as a sign of solidarity to the guild, of which he's a member.
On December 21st, Comedy Central announced that the show would return, along with The Colbert Report, on January 7, 2008, without writers.
