Marcia has been in awe of her new stepfather, Mike, as of late and wants to show her appreciation for him in some way. She finds just how to do that when she reads a newspaper story annoucing the "Father of the Year" contest.

But a series of misunderstandings arises as she tries to keep her nomination a secret. Using the den without permission and failing to do household chores leads to progressively more severe punishments. Finally, Mike lays the law down when Marcia sneaks out in the middle of the night to mail her entry (before the midnight deadline): Everyone will be going on a family skiing vacation ... except for her.

As she watches Alice flop horribly at skiing the Brady slope (a makeshift slope for first-time skiier Alice to practice her skills) Marcia cries and cries, disillusioned that her father could be so cruel, so harsh, so mean as to exclude her from a family bonding event. As that happens, the newspaper editorial board reviews all the entries from the "Father of the Year" contest and narrow the contenders to three, one of which is Marcia.

In the climatic scene, the newspaper and television crews assemble at the Brady house, where a stunned Mike is presented with the "Father of the Year" award. The publisher explains that the contest has been going on for many years, and never have they received such a tribute to a father than the one written by Marcia. Mike and a tearful Marcia embrace, the scene forever captured on the front page of the next day's paper. Presumably, Marcia is re-invited to the family ski trip.

• As Mike is entering the living room for the climatic scene and sees the television cameras set up, he exclaims, "What the hell is going on here?" The faux paus was apparently not noticed and the show aired with the mild profanity intact.
