The 1/2 Hour News Hour is a news comedy series created by 24 executive producer Joel Surnow for Fox News. Surnow initially described the series as "The Daily Show for conservatives" when he pitched it as This Just In for FOX. After the late-night division of the network passed the pitch onto Fox News, Surnow expanded on his concept by stating, "You can turn on any show and see Bush being bashed. There really is nothing out there for those who want satire that tilts right."
Two episodes were produced as special pilots in order to gauge viewer and critical response before moving on to create a full series. After the first episode premiered on February 18, 2007, the response was overwhelmingly negative. Some newspapers like The Philadelphia Inquirer went as far as saying that the show was "slow torture all by itself." Viewers, meanwhile, objected to the stale canned laughter and ill conceived jokes. Despite this, the network ordered a 15-episode first season.
