History

On September 16, 1956, TCN-9 began broadcasting in Sydney, with HSV-7 two months later in Melbourne. A year later HSV-7 and GTV-9 swapped affiliations.

In 1959, QTQ-9 in Brisbane and NWS-9 in Adelaide joined forming the basis for the national broadcaster known as the National Television Network. Which in the late 1960s became known as the National Nine Network or just the Nine Network.

The late 1980s had the addition of STW-9 in Perth.

On January 1, 2001, DVB-T transmissions began.

During 2007, the WIN corporation launched a successful takeover bid for STW-9.

In August 2009, a second digital channel GO was launched targeting a younger demographic.

On September 26, 2010, a third digital channel GEM was launched showing older movies in 1080i high definition. Nine at the same time switched their primary channel to 576i standard definition.

On March 26, 2012, launched a infomercial channel called Extra.

During 2013, the Nine Network switched their captioning provider from Red Bee Media to Ai-Media.

On September 30, 2013, the Nine Network purchased STW-9 back from the WIN corporation.

Current Prime-Time Schedules

The scheduling is based on the Victorian, Tasmanian, SA and WA markets which show NRL games on a secondary channel such as GEM. All other states and territories show NRL games on the primary 9 channel.

Distribution Uplinks

The Nine Network utilizes three 6.1 MHz slots downlinked at 12420 MHz, 12430 MHz and 12440 MHz on a full vertically polarized transponder beamed from the Optus D1 satellite for news backhaul links to TCN-9 and QTQ-9.

The uplink is provided from TCN-9, QTQ-9 and GTV-9 vehicles within metropolitan and surrounding areas of Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne, with portable TCN-9 equipment in remote locations, configured to use DVB-S QPSK modulation. The video is encoded using H.262 with a higher level chroma subsampling of Y'CbCr 4:2:2.

Common uses are for weather segments and breaking news.

The Nine Network also utilizes an additional 3.8 MHz slot downlinked at 12383 MHz on the same Optus D1 satellite transponder for the TCN-9 primary feed to STW-9. The video is encoded using H.264 and is configured to use DVB-S2 QPSK modulation. This feed began toward the end of 2013 when STW-9 reverted their ownership from WIN back to the Nine Network.

From October 2016, Nine switched providers from Optus to Intelsat with the links moving from D1 to IS-19 with the news backhaul links on 12602, 12612 and 12622 MHz. The additional 3.8 MHz slot was moved to 12551 MHz.
