Science Ninja Team Gatchaman is a science fiction anime program. In the future, earth is attacked by Galactor with a series of mechanical menaces. Each with their own vehicle and unique weapons, only Gatchaman's high-tech group of five young people can defend the earth from Galactor's repeated attacks as they attempt of fufill their mission to find Galactor's hidden headquarters and finally defeat Galactor.

Gatchaman originated the concept of teams of 5 members, with their own vehicles, which has been reused in many incarnations, including the ranger series (which came over to the US as Power Rangers).

Gatchaman spawned two sequel programs: Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, which were both combined and brought to American audiences by Saban Entertainment in 1996 as Eagle Riders.

Gatchaman was later brought by American syndicator Sandy Frank to US audiences in 1978 in a heavily edited form known as Battle of the Planets, and later by Turner Program Services in 1987 as G-Force.

On November 20, 2014, Canadian media company Corus Entertainment announced that its production division Nelvana Limited would be involved in a reboot of the Gatchaman franchise with a new version of Battle of the Planets (with the working title of Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas[1]), scheduled for a 2018 premiere. Nelvana was announced as being involved in co-production of the new BotP with Japanese and other international partners.[2] No further news about the reboot project has been released since 2016, indicating that the project may have been quietly shelved.
